Thank You, Austin ... and Farewell!

Austin Kibler served as an intern here at Sotterley from June to December of 2011. A SMCM student majoring in political science and history, Austin was recommended by Professor Ken Cohen who also served as his faculty advisor. Our staff at Sotterley wears many hats and our resources are often stretched to the limit. We always welcome our college interns to do critical and much needed work in many areas of museum operation.

After the incorporation of the new house tour last May, “Discovering Sotterley,” that required a literal raid on available collections vital to the tour, it was a perfect time for an intern to work with reorganizing, re-cataloguing, and researching our collections pieces. Working with members of the collection committee and Education Director, Jeanne Pirtle, Austin helped to update the inventory and re-package pieces for better conservation. He also researched pieces that are displayed in the Plantation House tour. This research will help interpreters answer visitor questions and give their presentations more depth. Knowing more about when a piece came into the collection, how it was obtained, who obtained it, dating the piece and other such details not only adds interest, but it will help us when assessing and applying for any conservation grants and planning for the future. Going beyond what was required, Austin took ownership of his work. He also helped to select and display pieces for new exhibits in our visitor’s center.

Austin also learned the new tour and worked as an interpreter during the fall months. After his internship was officially over, Austin continued to work on a volunteer basis to help us get ready for the first 2nd Saturday Series, “Backstairs/Upstairs” in January. The program was a huge success, and Austin was a major contributor. Austin is an example for others for his work ethic. He worked and collaborated with many different people with ease, both staff and volunteers. Austin has learned a great deal and has found that he desires an education and career in the museum field. He will be an asset to any organization. It was a pleasure working with him.

It was during this era that the Plantation was the site of one of the largest communities of enslaved African-Americans in the Southern Maryland region. Hear the stories of their resistance and their quest for freedom and learn how research helps us to uncover these important stories.

A Call for Volunteers
for the Sotterley Garden Guild

The Sotterley Garden Guild is in need of volunteers! The public is invited to attend the 2012 kick-off meeting on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. in Sotterley’s Warehouse. Many types of volunteers are needed to be part of this dedicated group at Sotterley Plantation. For those with a green thumb, working in the exquisite Colonial Revival Garden will be a perfect fit. This is also a terrific way for Master Gardeners to obtain additional required hours for certifications. Green thumbs are not required, however, and talented crafters are also needed to create items for purchase at various annual events. This tour is recommended for ages 13 & up due to the content of some information.

The British used an even greater weapon: they offered freedom to slaves. Not just men, but women and children as well. Sotterley and other plantations in the region suffered great financial loss, but the long term impact was the loss of their labor force. Sotterley’s story is one of decision, struggle, resistance and courage of enslaved African-Americans who saw an opportunity, faced the unknown, and took their chances to gain their freedom.

Our volunteers were here for us in such an enormous way - from helping to clear debris after the hurricane to putting on stellar performances; from assisting us with the events to being part of our summer mini camps; from tending to beauty in the Colonial Revival Garden to offering tech support; from working in the kitchen to making holiday cookies; from giving educational tours to sharing our social media links; from collaborations with our sister sites to face painting by college students at events; from donating time and effort as a Board of Trustees member to giving us a place to display our marketing banners; from helping us in the office to working in the museum shop ... and more. Sotterley Plantation is pleased to announce the beginning of something new in 2012 - the 2nd Saturday Series. The first four months of the year, the public will have the opportunity to experience four distinct aspects of this plantation’s past, present, and plans for the future.

New! Go behind the scenes at Sotterley. Become an insider and enter places you won’t see on a regular tour. See the kitchen and travel up the back staircase to view private chambers and undisplayed collections in our 1703 Plantation House. Learn what it takes to operate and support a museum. Another Year, Another Lovely Celebration with Friends of Historic Sotterley!

"It's wonderful during the holidays to spend time with supporters and volunteers who helped Sotterley through 2011 - and celebrate our successes," stated Nancy Easterling, Executive Director of Sotterley Plantation.

The honored guests arrived at the Hilton Garden Inn in Dowell - thanks to the gracious hospitality of Tom Waring and Brian Norris of Cherry Cove Hospitality. Many people who remember the ridiculously cold annual holiday dinners in the Sotterley historic Barn exclaimed, "What a perfect venue!" True ... there's a lot to be said for warmth.

After the reception hour of merriment and laughter, friends of Sotterley, old and new, made their way to the dining room, decked out for the season with Christmas trees, red roses, and sparkly chandeliers.

As in years prior, Michael Whitson, hosted the holiday event on Sotterley's behalf. As a Trustee Emeritus of Historic Sotterley, Inc., Mr. Whitson has not only been a tremendous supporter for years, but has also encouraged others to become part of the Sotterley fold - many of whom were in attendance. Stepping up to the microphone, he thanked the guests for their generous support, in his typically endearing way - with humor ... and sincerity.

Jan Briscoe, President of Sotterley's Board of Trustees, also passed along her words of thanks to all who made such a tremendous difference this year. She expressed her gratitude to the other members of the Board and to the Emeritus, who selflessly devote much time and effort to keep Sotterley thriving.

Executive Director of Sotterley, Nancy Easterling extended her deep appreciation to all who helped Sotterley during the challenging year of 2011, complete with a continuing depressed economy and the significant destruction caused by Hurricane Irene. "We could not have made it through without your support. We, at Sotterley, believe that this place truly does matter ... and you obviously believe it, too."

Once again, Canard's Catering (Lisa and Michael Kelley and crew) prepared and served a magnificent feast of:

Congressman Steny Hoyer spoke eloquently about the importance of Sotterley in both Maryland history and American history. He cited how imperative it is that Sotterley continue its mission, so future generations can learn about the past "blind spot" many Americans once held about Slavery. His timely holiday message reinforced that the educational experience at Sotterley helps us to be a better people, to not fall into blind spot judgment of any people.

Letter of Appreciation from Jeanne Pirtle, Education Director and Writer of the Holiday Candlelight Tours 2011 Script

To Director, Cast, Crew, Volunteers, and Sotterley Staff of Holiday Candlelight Tours 2011,

I have heard nothing but rave reviews from members and visitors who attended Candlelight this season. I wanted to give special thanks to Linda Tucker Jones for giving her all so this event could happen. Sets, decorations, costumes, rehearsals, casting, Whew! Special thanks goes to James LePore for directing this year’s production, your positive influence, free publicity and example made it a fun and uplifting experience.

I was especially proud of all the very young members of the cast this year. Our band of Mary Bowles guides who took on a big responsibility and added that extra dimension to the visitor experience this year, THANK YOU. Also to Tia, Emily and Sabrina, who showed their talent, worked hard and were cute as could be as young Mabel and Eleanor. Amanda and Sarah, you are an example to us all. You learned your parts quickly, you rolled with changes and you showed us what real teamwork is all about. Erin, Thomas and Hannah—Erin, you stepped up to carry a major aspect of the story. You made it look easy! Thomas, thanks, you had some serious material and you pulled it off. Hannah, who had to read the entire “Night Before Christmas” poem a thousand times and your wonderful musicianship, Wow! KUDOS!

Thanks to Shannon, (Rebecca Bowles) who had a ton of lines, had to step in and out of time and be convincing. As a first impression for the audience, you were stunning. Wonderful job! You helped set the stage for the rest of the performance.

The Drawing Room scene, I loved to see actors owning their characters. Patrick and Jeremy, when you stood up with your exchange about “older brother responsibilities” Wow! Mr. Greenwell, thanks for helping with the music tech and delivering your line with class. Ladies, Mrs. Greenwell, Erin and Catherine, you looked at ease and performed beautifully. Thanks Mrs. Greenwell for your choreography. This is something guests always look forward to in the Drawing Room. Mrs. Greenwell, when you adlibbed to “Tom” about his drinking, I thought it was a riot!

You know you have passed the test when descendants and people who knew the real people you play are proud of the performance and this was the case for this year’s production. Red Room 1850, wonderful job to all of you. Geno, you were fabulous and a beautiful ambassador for womanhood, and Helena, I believed you were sisters. Our Dr. Briscoe’s and Chapman’s, Neil and Paul, depth, seriousness and humor. Bravo!

There were a lot of firsts with this production. It was the first time that the Satterlee’s and Mabel Ingalls were depicted in a living history performance. The audience loved it! How the slave and servant roles were executed was amazing and something new. Lest we forget that more than just the owner’s families lived and worked at Sotterley. Javon, Jay, Shemika, Amanda and Sarah—for playing Gilbert, Robert, Ruth, Mary and Katherine--All I’ve heard from guests is praise for your portrayals. Great Great Great and Thank YOU for driving all the way here! I had someone ask me, “Are those girls really Irish?” The Knotts, both Charles and India added continuity and also were roles that had not been performed here before, thanks Leni and Stephen for your good portrayal of some really good people! Betsy, you were amazing as Louisa, you were splendid. Chuck, thanks as always for your support and never doing anything halfway! You were a great Herbert. Kim, Mabel was by far one of the most important roles, you were believable and beautiful. Once again I heard things like, “you know she looked like Mabel too.” You know when audiences say this you have done an outstanding job. It’s the acting baby! Thanks also to Mabel’s partners in crime, Bettylou and Debbie, who adapted to casting gaps and added that lighter touch the audience needed on their way out the door.

Of course to pull off a production you have to have the support of the organization, thanks to all Sotterley staff who worked hard on many aspects to make this a success, Joe’s maintenance staff is always proof that you can do a lot with a little. Thanks to our other volunteers that worked either directly with the production, like Dawn, Lesley and Sarah on assisting, make-up and lighting to volunteers who came to help make cookies or swing a flashlight in the cold. We couldn’t do it without each of you.

As Sotterley moves forward as a museum, living history and other dramatic performances will also grow along with our needs for those from all aspects of theatre production. This summer, our 1812 Living History commemoration, with a script written by Dale Jones, entitled, “The Choice,” will be presented on at least three different occasions over the summer of 2012 and beyond. The story revolves around those enslaved at Sotterley and their choice to run to the British or stay in their present circumstances. Along with the wonderful script, costumes for the major characters have also been professionally designed and created for this production. More information will follow soon, so Sotterley will be in need of theatre personal, not just actors, because this actually has fewer speaking roles, but lots of guides with some dialogue, extras, and other theatre support. Of course our traditional productions, such as Ghost Tours and Candlelight will also continue. Small vignette’s of living history are also beginning to be used, so Sotterley will have more need of living history performers on an important but smaller scale more often. As we grow, Sotterley will continue to improve our planning and scheduling to make more effective use of volunteer and staff efforts.

Thanks again to everyone involved. Keep talking it up. Word of mouth is still the best way to recruit. Watch for our 2012 Calendar of Events to pop up on the website before the end of this year.

You all should be very proud, I know I am. The Sotterley Players rock!

Sotterley Members Give Holiday Candlelight Tours 2011 Rave Reviews!

Every year, the Holiday Candlelight Tours event kicks off with a special opening night performance for Sotterley Members, which is another great reason to become a member of Sotterley! What is it exactly? It is a party!!! This is our way of thanking a very important part of the Sotterley family. It is a lovely evening of merriment ... food, drink, fun ... and THE TOUR!

Returning from their scheduled tour times of "Sotterley Christmas Past," members could be heard giving their effusive praise of this year's script and performance. One person had tears in her eyes, as she spoke of connecting with the story and the incredible actors. Another, a direct descendant of one of the Sotterley owners from way back, was absolutely delighted with how the script represented his family.

Family Plantation Christmas will be held on Saturday, December 3rd, 2011 from 10 am – 4 pm at Sotterley Plantation, offering a full day of wonderment and Christmas spirit!

Let Santa know what you want for Christmas, purchase scrumptious treats from Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen, take a horse-drawn carriage ride from 11 am – 1 pm and 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm, sing along with the carolers, make holiday crafts, visit the Sotterley Museum Shop to find unique holiday gifts while the children are buying presents at Santa’s Secret Shop, and purchase seasonal greens and hand-crafted items from Sotterley’s Garden Guild! Craft Vendors for choosey shoppers! Petting Zoo – for animal lovers! Patuxent Voices, a women’s acapella group, will perform Christmas favorites from many historical periods from 1 – 2 pm!

Open Auditions for the Holiday Candlelight Tours - "Sotterley Christmas Past" will be held this Saturday, October 29 from 3-5 p.m. at Sotterley Plantation. Cast and crew for this annual event consist of all volunteers, supporting the important educational programming at Sotterley, a non-profit, National Historic Landmark.

We are thrilled to announce that this year's Holiday Candlelight Tours will be directed by James LePore (photo above), long-time talented friend of Sotterley and a creative wonder - seasoned actor, playwright, graphic designer, and television and radio personality. If you have had the opportunity to attend the Ghosts of Sotterley Tours over the last three years, then you have experienced his incredible writing skills!

This year's script entitled, "Sotterley Christmas Past" was written by Sotterley's Education Director, Jeanne Pirtle (photo above). Weaving together a fine understanding of Sotterley's history with high caliber dialog, the script focuses on Sotterley’s past Christmas seasons with the families who lived here, guided by those who worked here. As visitors move from room to room within the 1703 Plantation House, they will share joy and sometimes bittersweet memories with the people of Sotterley from over the past three centuries … as they celebrate the season with love, laughter and good friends.

And YOU can be part of it all - portraying an amazing cast of characters! Roles available for the following:

2 Caucasian Males (Age 45-55)
3 Caucasian Males (Age 25-35)
2 African American Males (Age 20-30)
1 Caucasian Male (Age 16-20)

1 African American Female (Age 40-50)
2 Caucasian Females (Age 40-50)
1 Caucasian Female (Age 20-25)

Also needed: Costume assistance.

To ensure the highest quality of performance for audiences, attendance at all rehearsals and performances on the following dates is imperative and appreciated:

Additional weekday evening rehearsals may be called if needed based on actor availability.

Ghosts of Sotterley Tours 2011: “1878: After the Storm”

Tours run every ten minutes, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Reservations Required – No Walk-ins

After being greeted by their creepy guide, visitors of this year’s Ghosts of Sotterley Tours will begin their ghostly adventure by taking a wagon ride into the woods in the dead of night. Disembarking at the bottom of the hill under a canopy of trees, guests will begin the most spine-tingling outdoor walking tour of the season! All will encounter both the earthly inhabitants of the time and those not of this earth on this historical and spooky tour. This year’s new script is a time-traveling experience to the year 1878, when a vicious hurricane has swept up the East Coast causing a shipwreck at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Dr. Walter Hanson Stone Briscoe has been called upon to treat the survivors. Creepy chaos prevails as the plantation is reeling from the disaster and teeming with the restless spirits of the newly departed, as well as the spirits of those long past who have been unsettled by the upheaval.

Advance reservations are required. We cannot accommodate walk-ins. Tour times will begin at 7 p.m. and run every ten minutes. May not be suitable for young children. Dress appropriately for this spooky outdoor walking tour / production.

“Re-Interpreting Mount Vernon’s
Greenhouse Slave Quarters”
Friday, September 23, 2011 7:00 p.m. in the Barn

Sotterley Plantation is proud to partner with The Boeing Company in presenting Jennifer Van Horn. Her presentation entitled, “Re-Interpreting Mount Vernon’s Greenhouse Slave Quarters” will be held on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 7:00 p.m., the final presentation of this year’s Speaker Series at Sotterley.

In November of 2010, Mount Vernon reopened the Greenhouse Slave Quarters after an extensive restoration. This talk will explore the new interpretation of the men’s and women’s sleeping rooms (located in wings on either side of the Greenhouse), which originally housed approximately 50 of George Washington’s male and female slaves. None of the slave cabins survive today. Much of what we know about the living conditions of Mount Vernon's slaves is due to a 1798 written account by a visitor. Mount Vernon interprets the slave cabin as home to Scilla, who lived on Dogue Run Farm with her six children. Her husband, Slammin’ Joe, lived and worked at the Mansion House farm.
Because of the generous grant and continued support from The Boeing Company, Sotterley Plantation is able to offer this important community outreach, fulfilling its mission of serving as an educational resource and cultural venue while it seeks to preserve, interpret and research the plantation’s diverse cultures and environments through its history.

Site Reopens THURSDAY!

By this point, most of Southern Maryland knows of Hurricane Irene’s impact on Sotterley Plantation, and the devastating effects of losing over 100 trees and sustaining damage to a number of the site’s historic structures. Despite the necessity of closing for almost three weeks, however, Sotterley will reopen for business on Thursday, September 15, 2011. Plans to host our upcoming Speaker Series finale, the Riverside WineFest at Sotterley 2011, the Ghosts of Sotterley Tours, Family Plantation Christmas, and the Holiday Candlelight Tours are moving forward.

Upon reopening, the ravages of the storm will still be visible to our visitors. Scars will remain on the landscape and buildings which have yet to be restored. Each and every day, however, there is new headway in the ongoing restoration efforts, and Sotterley promises to not only host its many fall and winter events, it is committed to doing so in the usual Sotterley style.

The Southern Maryland community has shown Sotterley a great deal of support in the last few weeks, including invaluable assistance from volunteers. Critical donations are helping with the necessary restoration efforts of this beloved National Historic Landmark. Please contact the office if you are able to volunteer in the ongoing clean-up efforts or if you are willing to volunteer at one of our upcoming events. And, as always, donations are appreciated and are still being accepted via our website or by mail.

The staff, Board of Trustees, and all who love Sotterley, would like to thank our Southern Maryland community for its support. We look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming events.

This year’s tour will take guests back in time to the year 1878, when Sotterley was owned by Dr. Walter Hanson Stone Briscoe and his wife, Emeline. The family’s enjoyment of prosperity, good friends, county notoriety, and living the good life has been interrupted. A vicious hurricane has swept up the East Coast causing a shipwreck at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Dr. Briscoe has been called upon to treat the survivors. The plantation is reeling from the disaster and teeming with uninvited visitors - the restless spirits of the newly departed as well as the spirits of those long past who have been unsettled by the upheaval. Prepare to encounter both the earthly inhabitants of the time and those not of this earth on this historical and spooky walking tour!

New for 2011 – Additional Tour Nights! What could be better than 3 nights of the Ghosts of Sotterley Tours? 5 Nights of the Ghosts of Sotterley Tours! This year’s tours will run on October 13, 14, and 15th AND October 21 and 22nd.

Sotterley's Devastation from Hurricane Irene

Sotterley Plantation, a National Historic Landmark, is closed to the public until further notice due to extensive damage caused by Hurricane Irene. Much devastation was caused at this over 300 year old site, due to heavy downpours a few days prior to, and torrential rains and high winds during the storm.

To varying degrees, several historic and non-historic structures were affected, including the 19th century Smoke House, the Plantation House kitchen porch, the original 1830’s Slave Cabin, the Spinning Cottage, the Historic Barn, the Gardener’s Cottage, the Grape Arbor, and white picket fences. Rolling Road is impassable. As the site is at present, it is unsafe for visitors.

“Although this is devastating, we were so incredibly fortunate,” stated Nancy Easterling, Executive Director. “The 1703 Plantation House is in good shape, despite near misses by several enormous trees. Our newly restored Slave Cabin, while affected, is still intact. Our magnificent gardens are still glorious.”

Although trees lay atop the roofs of the Slave Cabin, the Historic Barn, and the Spinning Cottage, none of these buildings appear to have suffered serious damage. The Smoke House roof is shattered but the brick walls remain standing, though it has yet to be determined whether or not the walls have been structurally compromised. The Plantation House porch and sections of the kitchen roof will require complete rebuilding. The Grape Arbor is now non-existent. Some of the trees were iconic, well over 100 years old, and a tremendous loss in and of themselves.

The biggest problem Sotterley faces right now is the removal of the downed trees. Anticipating that much of the structural repairs will be covered by insurance, there is uncertainty about the total cost of tree and debris removal. Well over 30 trees are down and the nature trails have yet to be assessed.

“Donations to help with the massive clean-up effort are vital and will be tremendously appreciated,” said Easterling. “There are so many who love and understand the importance of this site, and we know with the support of this amazing community, we can restore Sotterley and preserve it for future generations.”

Bluebirds from a Soon-To-Be Eagle!

Receiving the distinction of Eagle Scout requires strong motivation, willingness to learn, careful planning, with a strong commitment to service. Isaac Wieser possesses all of these admirable characteristics, plus unmatched, unbridled enthusiasm. Born with Down syndrome, he doesn’t allow challenges to intimidate him one bit. Last week, after a full year of planning, organizing, supervising, and development, he delivered 10 white cedar bluebird houses to Sotterley Plantation, as part of the wildlife encouragement program.

“I’m so excited!” Isaac exclaimed, upon entering the Sotterley office with his mother and brother … and he has every right to be. After identifying Sotterley’s need for this valuable project at the 2010 Garden Fair, he set to work. With assistance from his family and fellow boy scouts in Troop 420 of Leonardtown, what began as an idea has become a reality.

After learning that bluebirds prefer white cedar, Isaac’s grandfather generously donated the wood for the project. Isaac’s next phase of learning included how to use a drill press and other tools correctly and safely, under the instruction of his father. Once the prep-work was complete, he supervised the construction of the high-quality bluebird houses. Grouping the scouts into teams, each responsible for a specific task on an assembly line, he oversaw each phase of development for quality assurance.

“We are so incredibly honored that Isaac chose Sotterley for this most amazing gift. This will help us to increase the bluebird population at Sotterley,” stated Nancy Easterling, Executive Director. “Most importantly, we have made a great friend in Isaac.”

Much thanks to Isaac Wieser, the Wieser family, and Boy Scout Troop 420 of Leonardtown, Maryland. We are grateful … and excited!

Bringing Truths to Light

St. Mary's College of Maryland student, Ryan Girgerty becomes an ambassador of Joseph McGill's Slave Dwelling Project.

Last Saturday afternoon, Joseph McGill arrived at Sotterley Plantation ready to spend the night in our original 1830's Slave Cabin, after a long day's travel from South Carolina. We were honored to officially become part of his nationally recognized "Slave Dwelling Project" (formerly known as "Slave Cabin Project") and receive his critical validation that "Sotterley is doing it right."

Sotterley's focus is not merely about the many residents of the big house (a.k.a. the Plantation House), but rather, encompasses the over 300 years of history of ALL who lived and worked here.

For those wondering why the name change of the project from Slave Cabin to Slave Dwelling, the answer is yet another truth ... there were places in the North were slaves lived and worked. According to McGill, this story is not readily discussed or taught and it needs to be included.

When asked what his purpose is for sleeping in the slave dwellings, McGill responded, “In saving these places it gives us an opportunity to bring the stories of African Americans off the back pages. We as African Americans are byproducts of those who endured. In telling their stories we are honoring them.”

St. Mary’s College of Maryland student Ryan Girgerty accepted McGill's invitation to sleep in the Slave Cabin's loft, which is smaller than his dorm room. Putting it into its true perspective, McGill spoke of the numbers of people/families who lived in one small cabin. Prior to extinguishing the lantern light, McGill shed the light of truth on the days of toil and turmoil ... and the significance of remembrance. A Fabulous Birthday Bash - An Independence Day Celebration Concert!

Music has a way of bringing people together! Listeners came by land and by sea. Thirteen boats were anchored down on Sotterley Creek, as the crews enjoyed the music rolling down hill and field. On land, several hundred visitors set up chairs and blankets for a lovely afternoon of patriotic music, bidding and taking chances on auction items, eating great American foods, and making cool crafts.

Part of the "On Location" SMCM River Concert Series, the Chesapeake Orchestra Brass Quintet was led by Maestro Jeffrey Silberschlag of St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The Chesapeake Orchestra Brass Quintet include: Robert Birch and Carlton Rowe, trumpet; Bryan Bourne, trombone; Mark Questad, French horn; John Cradler, tuba and guest performers Zach Silberschlag and Jeff Silberschlag, trumpet and Nathaniel Silberschlag, French horn. A BIG thanks to all of you for sharing your talents with all of us.

We are also grateful to the St. Mary's Arts Council, who made this event possible again this year. And much thanks to all of the visitors who joined in the celebration - our old friends and so many new friends!

Much thanks to Avis Robinson for participating in the Speaker Series 2011 with her heartfelt and inspiring presentation of “Please Remember Me - Slavery to Emancipation” last Sunday. She and her husband Eugene shared their personal collection of artifacts, as she recounted their family's powerful journey from the dark oppression of slavery to the light of freedom. They were a people who relied on their spirituality, persevered through obstacles, and ultimately succeeded with dignity, strong values, hard work, and education.

A Fond Farewell to Juliana

Juliana Franck is making final preparations for her upcoming graduation from St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The “Sullivan Scholar” gave her closing presentation to visitors and the Sotterley staff last week, following her six month internship at Sotterley Plantation. Her varied experiences were significantly helpful to our site.

“The best part of working at a museum for the first time was discovering that there’s a kind of “secret Sotterley” that not everybody gets to see - from the behind the scenes work of the museum’s operation to the site stories,” stated Franck. “It was an awesome opportunity to witness the changes that Sotterley Plantation is making. I love that previously stored collections have been unveiled to the world and that the Interpretation Committee coupled the objects with personal stories from a wide range of characters from the past. Even better was feeling like I was at all a part of it, and getting to delve into the collections with Jeanne Pirtle.”

As part of the IMLS Re-Interpretation Project, she assisted Dr. Kenneth Cohen, Professor of History and Museum Studies at SMCM and Sotterley Education Director, Jeanne Pirtle. In this realm, she transcribed oral histories and prepared excerpts from the next phase of this project – the production of streaming video for the website and the film which will be shown at the Sotterley Visitor Center.

During the research aspect of the internship, Franck focused on the Herbert Satterlee and the Colonial Revival Era at Sotterley. Her assistance with evaluating research obtained from the Maryland State Archives on farming and tax records revealed the buildings and their locations during Satterlee’s ownership. Franck’s research was used in the creation of the new Plantation House tour experience, looking at the over 300 years of history through the lens of the Colonial Revival time period.

The Larder Project also benefited from Franck’s time and attention, adding a new room to the guided tour. Combining past and recently obtained research, she was part of the team to choose specific pieces for inclusion from the Sotterley collection and from other sources.

Additionally, Franck worked in the Sotterley Archives, which were in desperate need of being reorganized. Not only did she recommend the purging of some items which did not belong, but she successfully put into effect a usable cataloging system for retrieving information concisely and efficiently.

“Juliana was absolute joy to have here at Sotterley,” stated Sotterley Education Director, Jeanne Pirtle, “This internship was a rich experience for both the site and for Juliana.”

“After graduation this May, I'm hoping to pursue a master’s degree in Anthropology, said Franck. “Until then, I'm headed back home to Frederick, MD, to land myself a job and enter the real world.”

Symonds, Distinguished Professor of American Naval Heritage at the U.S. Naval Academy, as part of the 2011 Speaker Series. Widely published, author or editor of twenty-five books including prize-winning biographies, his lecture “Abraham Lincoln and the Navy” will illuminate the crucial role the president played in managing the naval aspects of America's greatest conflict.

Lincoln's entire presidency was dominated by America’s greatest war, which made his role as commander in chief central to his administration. Though a number of historians have studied Lincoln's relationship with his generals, no one has previously examined his relationship with the Navy and in particular with the men who led it—the admirals.

Site Re-Interpretation Results in a NEW Guided Tour at Sotterley Plantation

Sotterley Plantation is pleased to announce the NEW Guided Tour “Discovering Sotterley” of the 1703 Plantation House, which will be ready for public viewing on Sunday, May 1st, first day of the 2011 tour season.

A team of people came together beginning in the summer of 2010 to collaborate on the creation of a new guided tour for Sotterley Plantation. The goal was to not only gain a consistent and strong tour that would better recount Sotterley’s 300 year history, but to ensure that the stories of all who lived and worked here, including those enslaved, were remembered and told. The end result produced a tour which offers far more than Sotterley’s original goal, however, and the new tour will stand out from other sites in its approach and the experience it offers to visitors.

The new guided tour will still examine the complex and rich three century history of Sotterley Plantation, but will now also look at the site and its people through the lens of the Colonial Revival movement. At the turn of the 20th century when there was a resurgence of patriotism in our nation, the site was purchased and painstakingly restored by Herbert and Louisa Satterlee. Their restoration efforts focused on portraying the ideals of our colonial past, yet in doing so both highlighted and masked different aspects of Sotterley’s history. The new tour will not only offer new glimpses and perspectives into this National Historic Landmark’s past, but will also showcase collections pieces not previously displayed, which help to tell Sotterley’s stories.

This tour was made possible when Sotterley was awarded an Institute of Museum and Library Services grant last summer due to the efforts of Board of Trustees member Merideth Taylor. The new tour was written by Ken Cohen, Professor of History at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, and this summer Professor Cohen will also help create a Plantation Tour of the grounds which will then be made into an audio tour for visitors. Finally, the grant will produce an audio version of the guided tour, a 10-minute video about Sotterley Plantation, and help place streaming videos on the website.

The Plant Sale, sponsored by the Sotterley Garden Guild, will run from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Because of their dedication to this National Historic Landmark, these nurturing volunteers have not only raised thousands of dollars in support of Sotterley Plantation, but they are also responsible for the maintenance of exquisite Colonial Revival Garden. Their passion for beauty is evident to the smallest of details, so take the opportunity to appreciate their horticultural artistry!

The Free Plant Exchange will run from 10:00 a.m. to Noon. Your plants in exchange for other annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, shrubs, trees, bulbs and seeds! “Every year the Warehouse overhang is filled and overflowing with plants – all from someone’s garden so they will thrive in this area,” stated Linda Bazemore, Free Plant Exchange Coordinator, “and as long as we have plants available, people can go through the line as many times as they would like.” For information regarding the Free Plant Exchange, call 301-904-3439.

Last week, Brian Hayden, Operations Director for BAE Systems’ Integrated Technical Solutions presented a $1,000 check in continuing support of Historic Sotterley, Inc. to Janice L. Briscoe, Esq., Sotterley Board of Trustees President (right) and Nancy Easterling, Sotterley Executive Director (left).

Recognizing that Sotterley Plantation is an invaluable educational resource within the Southern Maryland community, BAE Systems is committed to continuing their support. Both their In-Kind and financial contributions over the years have had a tremendous impact, especially with much-needed critical projects. Things would look a lot different around the plantation without their help - and not in a good way.

"This check is the most recent example of the significant and generous support that BAE provides to Historic Sotterley, Inc. We are so grateful and honored by all that BAE does for Sotterley and our entire community," said Ms. Briscoe.

After our former Museum Shop wall collapsed last year, only three weeks prior to the start of the season, we needed to move the Museum Shop and Visitor Check-in to a new location. It was decided that the best place would be the Knott House, which was not in the best condition. BAE employees descended upon the site and played a huge role in achieving a truly remarkable renovation!

Sotterley is a Team Sport - I have said and written those words so many times over the last few years. And now, with the launching of our new website, those very words take on a whole new level of meaning.

Today is the day - our new website has launched! Much thanks goes to those who have become the significant players on the Sotterley team: Josh Davis of The Baynet and John Tayman, Web Designer.

The BayNet has generously supported our efforts for several years now. In the recent history of the past six months (which has propelled them to the highest level of corporate sponsorship), they offered the web design services of John Tayman. From the very first meeting, I just knew we had a three point shooter. Impressed by his technical savvy, I was wow-ed when he spoke of being an artist and showed examples of his work.

After months in the making - of emails, phone calls, and meetings - we are here. Gratefully, Josh and John get it - they get the site. With a true understanding of who we are, what we are about, and where we want to be, they made this happen for Sotterley. Thank you - a million times over - from all of us.

Every year, during this most festive season, Historic Sotterley's Emeritus Trustee and devoted supporter, Michael Whitson hosts a wonderful holiday celebration on Sotterley's behalf. And every year, special guest Majority Leader Congressman Steny Hoyer attends, along with many generous sponsors, Sotterley Board of Trustees members, staff and volunteers.

In the best of cheer, invited guests gathered at the J.T. Daugherty Conference Center for the 6:00 p.m. reception, thanks to the gracious hospitality of Tom Waring and Brian Norris. As the dinner hour approached, all received a votive candle and a hush came over the crowd ... the holiday music began, the screens were parted, and the oohs and aahs could be heard as guests were invited to dine in a wintry wonderland. Tables were elegantly set amid arrangements of sparkling icicles and red roses, with the mammoth winter scene backdrop. And it just kept getting better and better! Lisa and Michael Kelly of the Brome-Howard Inn (and introducing Canard's Catering) not only wow-ed the crowd with the most delightful ambiance, but also created a meal to remember: five delectable hors d'oeuvres, butternut squash bisque, baby greens with baked brie encrusted in almonds, rockfish bites and jumbo lump crab, braised short ribs with chimichurri, potato duchess, haricot verte and red pepper bundle, topped off with a winter wonderland of chocolate for the sweet!

The Sotterley Players are ready to perform the new script this weekend! Not only is this a wonderful script by playwright Bettylou Ryan and tremendous acting by the entire cast, but this is the tour held within our 1703 Plantation House (a.k.a. The Mansion)!

Setting the stage: The Civil War rages on throughout the Southeast, but the holiday spirit is alive and well at Sotterley. Upon entering the historic Plantation House, tour guests will have the opportunity to witness the annual holiday celebration of Dr. Walter Hanson Stone Briscoe and Mrs. Emaline Briscoe. On November 29, 2010 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., several members from Sotterley’s Board of Trustees, staff, and supporters will be volunteering on Maryland Public Television’s pledge drive during the premiere of “Cirque du Soleil – Flowers in the Desert.” The program will be televised 10 times over the upcoming year. “This is a wonderful and mutually beneficial opportunity for both Sotterley and Maryland Public Television. We are delighted to answer phones and take pledges on MPT’s behalf. As a bonus, it will afford Sotterley and its mission statewide television exposure,” stated Nancy Easterling, Executive Director of Sotterley Plantation.

But please feel free to take a Self-Guided Tour from Nov. 1 - April 30th on Tuesdays - Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Sundays from Noon - 4 p.m. Just stop by the Visitor Center to pick up the map!

Architectural Tour for SMCM Students

Sotterley Plantation welcomed the Historic Building Curator of Historic St. Mary's City, Peter Rivers, and a group of St. Mary's College of Maryland students for a unique tour experience yesterday afternoon. Sotterley's Restoration Manager, John O'Rourke, shared facts and findings on this architectural tour of the 1703 Plantation House. Entering through the original front door on the water side, students had the opportunity to see parts of the structure rarely seen. Glimpsing below floor boards and crawling into some tight spaces, they noted areas of original construction and ongoing restoration efforts.
