Hello September! And Plan Ahead for October!

Speaker Series #6
Michael J. Kurtz, Ph.D.
 "Monuments Men"
Wednesday, September 17th at 7:00 p.m. in the Barn
In the long saga of cultural looting and destruction, the Nazi war was unprecedented in its ideological ferocity and brutal effectiveness on Europe's cultural heritage.  Yet, in the midst of the destruction wrought by the Nazis, a band of men and women serving in the U.S. military during World War II, known as the Monuments Men, fought a valiant struggle to preserve what could be saved and to restore precious objects to devastated communities.  This presentation will explore why the Nazis sought to obliterate the cultural heritage of the Jewish people and others who were considered "inferior races."  Front and center will be the work of the Monuments Men, who fought to counter Nazi depredations and the successes they achieved.  From the 1930's until today the story of cultural restoration continues!

This event is FREE to the public. Advance reservations are required due to limited seating. Call 301-373-2280 to make your reservation.

Because of the generous grant and continued support from The Boeing Company, Sotterley Plantation is able to offer this important community outreach, fulfilling its mission  to preserve, research, and interpret Sotterley Plantation's diverse cultures and environments and to serve the world as an educational, cultural, and community resource.

The Sotterley Farmer's Market!
Sotterley has always had strong ties to our Southern Maryland farming community, having been a working farm during all of its 300 year existence. This year we will further strengthen these ties as we proudly announce the unveiling of the Sotterley Farmer's Market - a producer only farmer's market! Every Saturday between 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. running from May 24 through September 27, 2014, the public is invited to the Sotterley Plantation grounds to shop local.

After buying wonderful local produce we have, we hope our guests will also stay in order to take advantage of our site's beauty, nature trails, and history. Visitors need only to check in at the Visitor Center, then they can enjoy themselves hiking and touring the site - and remember that Sotterley members get in free! And also new for 2014, your furry friends are welcome on our nature trails (on a leash, please)!

  Final Speaker 2014 Series Presentation
 Sandy Cannon-Brown
"SPAT: Bringing Oysters Back
to the Chesapeake Bay"
Wednesday, October 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the Barn

After centuries of over-harvesting, and recurring bouts of devastating diseases, oyster populations in the Chesapeake Bay plummeted along with the profits of the industry and the health of the Bay.  In 2013, more than a billion hatchery-raised baby oysters were added to the Bay and new breeds of disease-resistant, meatier, faster-growing oysters are thriving in commercial aquaculture. Culture and ecology clash in this captivating story about one of the Bay’s most important critters. “SPAT: Bringing Oysters Back to the Chesapeake Bay” is directed and produced by Sandy Cannon-Brown, who is passionate about the vitality of ecosystems and the protection and health of their inhabitants.
Ms. Canon-Brown’s personal awards include the prestigious Woman of Vision award from Women in Film & Video and Special Achievement Awards for script writing and directing from TIVA (Television, Internet and Video Association of DC). She has also earned dozens of top awards in international festivals.
This event is FREE to the public. Advance reservations are required due to limited seating. Call 301-373-2280 to make your reservation.
